CHEYENE GOLD sor. M, APPALOOSA, 1951
| Color: sor Height: blkt
ApHC #F2671
Breeder: Kenneth West, SD. 1961 Natl Ch. Produce of Dam. A good South Dakota-bred appaloosa. She was from the Cheyenne River Reservation. She was an Agency-bred mare foaled on the Cheyenne Reservation. Her sire and dam were not named on her papers when she was registered, but she carried some strong color genes that have dominated her get and grand get. While Cheyenne Gold was unregistered and her actual pedigree may never be known, it is thought that she probably came from Claude Thompson`s line of Painter Appaloosas (Moro, Oregon) or the Starbuck Leopard line (Idledale, Colorado area). The Indian Bureau purchased several good Appaloosa stallions to be used in a program aimed at upgrading the South Dakota reservation horses. The Thompson-bred stallion, Painter, ApHC F-8, and several Starbuck leopards were included in this program. Cheyene Gold, foaled in 1951, resulted from this improvement program. The Appaloosa blood was reported to have been in the tribal horses long before the introduction of the Remount stallions to that area.
